Class Descriptions

KICKS offers weekly classes in Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Mini Dance, Hip Hop, Musical Theatre, Acro, Lyrical, Jazz/Acro, Contemporary, Technique, and Adult Barre & Conditioning!

Class Sizes

Classes are kept small to ensure quality of instruction.
Mini Dance – maximum 9 students
All other classes – maximum 10-14 students (depending on the age of the class)

Class Breakdown

Each dance class at KICKS begins with a warm-up to prepare the body for exercise. Various stretching and strengthening exercises are performed during the warm-up to increase flexibility, strength, and control. Dancers will practise, acquire, and perform dance combinations specific to the type of dance, age, and ability level.

 

 


 

Mount Albert – Class Descriptions
Ballet

The foundation for all dance forms. Improve strength, poise, balance, and control. Technical skill gained through the study of ballet is necessary for all other forms of dance. Dancers will study the discipline of ballet through the Royal Academy of Dancing (R.A.D.). KICKS offers the prestigious and globally recognized R.A.D. Grade and Vocational Examinations (Grade 2 to Advanced 2). Students considering competing in dance in the future should enroll in a ballet class.

Jazz & Jazz/Acro

A fundamental dance form that complements all other dance forms. Jazz classes are comprised of a warm-up, centre work, and progressions including jumps and turns. Technique and style are emphasized through choreography. Beginner students will learn basic jazz steps, progressive skills, and jazz combinations and routines. Jazz is offered to all ages and skill levels, from beginner to advanced.

Jazz/Acro is just like a Jazz class, but also incorporates fun acro tricks such as cartwheels, bridges, handstands, headstands, walkovers, and balancing and flexibility tricks.

Tap

Make music with your feet! Students will learn basic, progressive, and intricate tap steps and rhythm combinations. Develop and improve timing, rhythm, and coordination. Once you start tapping, you’ll never want to stop!

Mini Dance

An introductory program for young dancers. The fundamentals of  jazz and ballet are learned through fun and creative movement. Specifically designed for 3 to 4-year-olds, Mini Dance class sizes are kept small and taught by a professional instructor accompanied by class assistants.

Hip Hop

Dance to your favourite hip hop music and learn all the current dance steps from L.A and NYC! This program is a high-energy dance experience that is fun for dancers of all ages! KICKS’ hip hop teachers cover the newest hip hop and street moves including popping, locking, break dancing, and L.A.-style hip hop.

Acro

A combination of dance and gymnastics. Learn how to properly execute acrobatic tricks and develop gymnastics skills. Improve strength, flexibility, agility, and physical control in a safe and fun environment.

Acrobatic Arts: Acrobatic Arts is based on safe and effective progressions with proven results in five divisions of Acro Dance: Flexibility, Strength, Balancing, Limbering and Tumbling. This is strictly a technique class, implemented to work through the Acrobatic Arts Syllabus with certified instructor, Miss Angelina Leofanti. Students must have previous experience in Acro. Acrobatic Arts is highly recommended for competitive students.

Musical Theatre

This program combines dance movements with an emphasis on developing acting and performance skills. Routines and combinations are inspired by musicals and movies. Dancers will use facial expressions and body movements to portray different characters and storylines.

Contemporary

Covers a range of techniques and styles. Contemporary dance is characterized by its versatility. Movement is used as a creative form of expression.

Lyrical

Combines the beauty and grace of ballet and the style and strength of classical jazz. Music is soft and flowing. Balance, extension, and control are developed. Classes are available for the experienced ballet dancer.

Technique and Flexibility

Various stretching and strengthening exercises are performed to increase flexibility, strength, and control. Technical skills are also practiced to improve ballet and jazz technique. Students are taught how to apply their ballet technique to other dance forms. This class is mandatory for competitive dancers.

Adult Barre & Conditioning Class

Barre & Conditioning class is a one-stop shop that includes all the essentials of a well-rounded exercise program. The major benefits of barre class are improved posture, muscle definition, increased flexibility, and reduced stress to name a few. Barre class is suitable for ALL levels. In class, we will use a combination of postures inspired by ballet and other disciplines like yoga and Pilates. The barre is used as a prop to balance while doing exercises that focus on isometric strength training combined with high reps of small range-of-motion movements. We will also use mats and hand weights.
